"We are on the verge of a revolution in medicine: understanding, treating, and ultimately preventing the causes of degenerative aging. But medical revolutions only happen if we all stand up in support of funding and research. We did it for cancer. We're doing it for Alzheimer's. We can do it for aging - and create an era of longer, healthier lives!"

Lifeline has surfaced again with news about their forthcoming antioxidant-promoting drug, now called Protandim.
Protandim is not an antioxidant, but its patent-pending formulation induces the body to produce more of its own natural antioxidant enzymes, thereby utilizing biology not chemistry to fight oxidation.
The body's primary antioxidant is Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and its levels have previously been shown to be directly correlated to aging in 14 different species, including humans. Species with the highest amounts of SOD live the longest and any increase in SOD corresponds to an increase in lifespan. According to separate studies conducted by John Tower, a molecular biologist at the University of Southern California, and by molecular biologist John Phillips of the University of Guelph in Ontario, the extended time of life was youth. Old age was postponed.
...
After very promising pre-clinical results, Protandim is currently undergoing human trials at the renowned Webb-Waring Institute of Cancer, Aging and Antioxidant Research (Webb-Waring). Although the duration of the studies will continue for a period that extends past the projected product release timeframe, there is already enough data to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of the Protandim product.
I imagine that this will prove popular with the healthy life extension community, just like resveratrol, and for all the same reasons. There is a school of thought that suggests trying anything with modest scientific backing for positive effects on healthy life span - and very good backing for a lack of negative effects - is worth the money. This is more of the same risk-reward evaluation that responsible consumers should apply to any supplement or medical product.
I confess that I'm not quite following the shuffle of companies involved in this product, but I'll be interested to see the results from human trials. Like other substances (such as resveratrol), it has some nice lab work behind it to date. The big question, as for all supplements with nice lab work behind them, is whether or not it works once stuffed into a pill...
UPDATE: It's actually rather unclear as to whether the product being pushed by Lifeline is the same as the original (produced by Ceremedix) back when they started out. The same applies to whatever they are testing now - is it in fact backed up by clinical studies, or do those refer to a different chemical or protein? Read this thread from the Immortality Institute forums for more background information.
UPDATE (June 03 2005): In light of all the recent interest, visitors might find it helpful to read my latest post on the topic of Lifeline and Protandim.

Although it has been shown that the overexpression of Cu/Zn and Mn-SOD increased the overall lifespan of transgenic flies who were engineered to overexpress the gene, a more recent study suggests that lifespan extension due to overexpression of mitochondrial SOD (and thioredoxin reductase) only occurs in backgrounds of short-lived strains as long-lived strains showed no benefit.
http://www.jbc.org/cgi/content/full/278/29/26418
This brings into question the usefulness of raising SOD (and other endogenous antioxidant) levels for the purpose of lifespan extension in species which are already long-lived.
Perhaps Protandim, whatever the formulation, may have some health benefit in individual with higher than normal levels of oxidative stress, but if the above study is applicable in general, it is likely that extending maximum lifespan will not be one of its effects.

I think we all may be missing the real point. I think we all wish we could feel, look and act younger but this protandim may not cure the wrinkles and the outward "niceties" that aging produces!! Instead I am looking ahead, hoping I can live longer than most; preventative for me.
What the heck? I'd love to feel 20 again....
p.s. I am only 38, but aging sucks...

First, it would be nice to live a longer life span, but while we are living longer, we have to watch the others that are not taking it die earlier, it would be like being immortal for an extra 20 years (maybe), also nobody has said if there are side effects from this new health supplement, is there any dangers that we should know about before taking it?
If this supplement works and it does reverse the aging process, then it would be a hugh break throught and he can thank only one person mother nature, she was the one who grow the plants that went into the supplement. I myself will be trying this new experimental supplement and in 3 months i will see if it does work.

Remember all the hype over resveratrol not so far back? Same deal here folks; this is something of a storm in a teacup. 20% life extension in mice, as claimed by Ceremedix's CMX-1152 rather than whatever Lifeline is selling under the Protandim brand, can be done with good diet - a few years here or there is far from the best that medical science can achieve. If you want a much longer, healthier life, then give your support to efforts like Aubrey de Grey's Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS) initiative:

Love the idea of a pill to reduce free radicals and stress related symptoms to the body
Making it available as a daily supplement is a good idea
Looking at the ingredients, I like the fact that I am not taking medication but food supplements
Unlikely to be addictive either, it should be made in mass quantities so the price can drop
because not everyone has an extra $50 a month to spend on one pill.

Protandim aledgedly revs up the body's machinery to produce our natural antioxidants catalase and superoxide dismutase at about 400 % over normal levels. My concern would be that this might be like a fast idle with the potential of making this machinery " pump its little guts out " as Earnestused to say

Hi Great World of Ours! We are so blessed to live in a world where studies like this are being performed. I watched the brief interview discussing Protandim last night on Prime Time and I could not contain my excitement. I'll tell you why. I recently had a breakthrough with my own health (in general) after seventeen years of excruciating pain in my muscle tissue, enduring muscle biopsies, extremely elevated CPK's and other testing, I discovered NUTRITION to be my saviour. Not ONE neurologist, or rheumatologist had a clue what was causing my body to burn my own muscle tissue for fuel. Even the morphine patches and other narcotics I lived on did not TOUCH my pain. In short, it was discovered through a simple blood test that I had a vitamin B6 malabsorption. Without going into too much detail, supplementation has CHANGED MY LIFE. I felt SO bruised-to-the-touch that I cried even if my own children hugged me. FOLKS, I am here to tell you that if I have been able to alleviate my pain 70% through the use of nutritional supplements, I am DEFINITELY interested in trying Protandim. I now have "QUALITY OF LIFE" but know that my body desires MORE and I'm not sure what it is. Protandim JUST MAY BE what my body is looking for. I (without a doubt) would like to try Protandim. If there is a clinical trial's study going on in Raleigh, NC, I would like to know. I don't want to offend anyone, but please believe me when I say that "our bodies are screaming for nutritional changes". How long can we continue to believe that our bodies can cope with all the stresses we have in life when we are feeding them junk food and processed food. Unfortunately, I fear that the current cost of Protandim may deter some folks who really need it, from being able to afford it. Is there any chance that the price may come down in the near future?

I too am very excited about the promises of Protandim. I was diagnosed with type two diabetes almost 20 years ago and have unfortunately developed most of the ailments attributed to this disease to include chronic kidney disease. I too am also interested in being in the study. If I can get a mosquito bite and have it heal in less than 3 weeks, I am sold. Definately excited about the prospects.

I am a 62 year old male in very good health. I exercise and watch my diet vigorously. I would be happy to maintain my current state of health and would rejoice if it could be improved to previous norms.
Other than the T-bar testing is there any measure of effectivity that has been reported. I would hate to lay out the cost of this suppliment and have a measurable improvement.
Have there been any negative reactions to Protandim?

I was very excited to watch the PrimeTime last night about Protandim. I have been diagnosed with MS ten years ago and I am doing fine. One thing I learned was to be very careful about any western or alternative medication/vitamis. I check everything really well, before taking them. I searched the net about Protandim. Could not find anything negative about it, only good things. You can find all of the information and if you want order it from this site:
http://www.lifelinetherapeutics.com/index.htm
I called and order two bottles for myself and my husband this morning. Meanwhile I will continue with my research to make sure that it is safe to take. If this medicine really does what they are claiming, this would be something really huge for us and mainly the next generation.

Susan, there are plenty of pills for the dying part. But I'd be willing to wager a large sum of money that if you were an experienced, wise 75-year old with the body, health and vigor you had at 30, you wouldn't suddenly wake up one morning and decide to take the cyanide capsule...as I've pointed out elsewhere, it's the getting old that gets old. Without age-related degeneration, what would there be to turn us off the wonderful process of living life?

I am very excited about this pill, and have already ordered two bottles couple of days ago. But meanwhile I am still researching about Protandim on line. One thing that I like to mention and of course I will let my doctor know as well is that I have hyperactive thyroid which was treated couple of years ago. Currently I am on daily medicaction (Levothroid) so my thyroid can have the normal daily function. One of the ingredients in Protandim is Ashwagandha which according to one study in animals, this particular herb may raise thyroid hormone levels. Therefore it should not be used by people with hyperthyroidism. Unfortunately on the fact label of Protandim does not say exactly how much they are using for each ingredients, only the total amount. I did send an e-mail about this to their customer service today, and also I will contact my doctor to get his opinion as well. Since Hyperactive thyroid is very common among people, therefore I thought I should share this with you all, and also get your opinion. Thanks.

I'm afraid that Protandim will turn out to be a scam. PrimeTime did now show any independent evidence or supporting research.
There is also no scientific literature that I can find on how Milk Thistle, Bocopa, Aswanganha, Green Tea, Tumeric can cause the body to produce SOD and Catalayse.
Show us some real proof or this will be just another scam like the fake penis pill advertised on the same Primetime show.
I'm really pissed at Primetime for such a poor job.

Sal, I think the price of the pill is probably cheaper than if you bought the ingredients separately. Plus, from what I read you need to have the right proportions of each ingrediant to make this work. That's probably the secret to all of this. It's a trade secret, like Coca Cola.

Interestingly Dr. Ann Wigmore talked about "SOD" benifits years ago and pointed out that it, other hugely beneficial enzymes, and other little understood nutrients can be found in readily available wheatgrass juice. This can be much less expensive than suppliments which are for sale for profit, although this Protandim does sound promising.

I ordered Protandim and it was delivered today, 6/11/2005 - I took my first dose at approx 2.30PM ET, It is now 4.30PM and already I have noticed a marked increase in energy levels (possibly attributed to the caffeine in the green tea extract).
I will post my personal experience on this forum over the next few weeks. I am not expecting any immediate results, probably notice a gradual result in approx 4 weeks.
I am 30 yo, male, smoker (20 p/d), no health problems (other than an occasional cold or flu twice per year), cholesterol normal, stable and normal blood pressure, moderate alcohol drinker, currently take one multi viatamin per day for approx. 1.5 years (centrum for men with lycopene).
Will keep you all posted, of course my experience is not scientific proof of the effectiveness of the product - just one man's opinion.
Also I have made a mental note, not to take product at night due to green tea extract ingredient (caffeine).

Milk Thistle, Bocopa, Ashwangandha, Green Tea, Tumeric and Calcium.
Doesn't seem like a mix that will kick off SOD and Cat.. generation by the cells. My guess is this is a scam.

The two bottles which I have ordered arrived two days ago. (One for me and one for my husband) We started on Protandim yesterday morning. Today we took the second pill. According to them, it will take at least thirty days before we can feel any result. I am 43 years old, and have had MS for the past ten years, and doing good. My husband is 55 years old and in good health and does not have major problem. I will let you know about our personal experience as we get closer to the 30 days. Thanks.

I am 62 years old and would like to be involved in any studies. I take good care of myself by doing cardio and weight bearing exercises 4 times a week. I also take vitamins. If there is a study going on please nitify me. I also have been taking the oral HGH spray on and off and am not sure if it makes any difference onther than in your wallet.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Bob Wood
